Grampa’s Story

Grampa’s Weeder has been pulling weeds and their roots for over 100 years! Invented in 1913 in Seattle, Washington, it quickly became a must-have tool for gardeners in the Great Northwest. Production stopped in 1941 when metal was needed for the war effort, and unfortunately, it didn’t resume after the war.

That all changed in 1999 when my husband, Greg, discovered my mother’s old garden tool in her garage. Once he figured out how it worked, he was hooked! Soon, Grampa’s Gardenware Co. was born, and we started hand-making this classic tool in our Oregon garage. Our family was excited to bring “Grampa” back to gardeners everywhere.

Over the past 25 years, our small family business has come a long way. We’ve moved beyond the garage (thankfully!) and now proudly sell thousands of Grampa’s Weeder tools worldwide.

This simple lever, designed over a century ago, still remains one of the most effective weed removers on the market. It saves knees and backs while being using no chemicals. What worked well in 1913 still works well today. It’s true—”Everything Old Is New Again!” and Grampa’s Weeder proves it to us everyday.

    Awesome Garden Tool
I have been impressed with this simple, yet very effective garden weeding tool! It’s so simple to use. Simply stick it over the weed, push down with the assistance of the foot pad, release your foot and rock the entire tool back. Weed comes out from root to top. Easy! Here are the reasons I really love it. No assembly. It’s one piece.Hoeing gets the job done faster, but this tool prevents accidental hacking of the plants and flowers you want to keep. And hoeing usually cuts the weeds in half and doesn’t get to the roots. It can get tedious to remove weeds one by one with this tool, but it’s worth it in my opinion. No bending, stooping, or kneeling. This has spared my bad back and knees.I’ve been able to remove weeds growing through my creeping phlox without disturbing it. I’ve also been able to remove weeds growing tight against the edge of the walkway and sometimes in between shrub roots. It’s also effective in hard to reach places. I’ve been able to remove weeds under thick shrubs by simply shoving the tool underneath and into the ground without using the footpad (because I can’t reach under with my foot) and rocking it back. 8 out of 10 times it’s been successful using it that way!No more weed killer. It’s not good for our ground water since we’re on well water and I don’t have to worry about my grapes and blueberries being poisoned. It also works on tree seedlings and saplings. We have ash and tulip trees sprouting up in the beds all the time and this tool removes those, too, by the root!So far it’s been indestructible even after heavy usage (we have multiple very large beds)! The one thing I have to say is that if your soil has been getting a lot of rain, it can clog up in between the prongs. I’ve whacked and banged the prongs on garden boulders and our retaining walls to knock the clumps out. It takes the beating like a champ. The piece as a whole is super solid and very well made.Just be aware that if you have mulch, the mulch can jam in between the prongs and sometimes takes effort to remove. Other than that, it’s such a great piece that other family members have since bought their own based on my experiences.

FANTASTIC tool for removing clumps of weed.
I purposely don’t use chemicals on the lawn because of my two beloved senior dogs, and so the dandelion clumps have been growing and spreading out of control. This is a dummy proof tool that anyone can use. All you have to do place the mouth (of the clamps) in the center of the weed clump and step on the foot pedal to dig into the weed clump. For large clumps, I do have to dig into it a few times, as it’s harder to find the center where the main root is. But having to dig into it a few times over is not a big deal at all because it beats having to dig into it by hand!I find that I still have to bend over occasionally to grab the clump out of the clamp, but other than that, it works very well digging into the weed. The dirt is softer the day after it rains, this helps to pull the weed clumps easier! Keep this in mind to make it easier on yourself.

    Effective & easy to use
Why did you pick this product vs others?:This tool may be simple but it really works! I spent about 90 minutes and filled a large outdoor trash can with dandelions and similar weeds. It’s so simple to use – place it around the center of the weed, step on the side & jab down, then step-tilt the weed out. I pulled these on the first damp day after a long dry spell. No regrets! This is now part of my gardening trifecta that can tackle nearly any daily task: the granpa weeder, a hori hori knife, and garden shears. If I had pulled all these weeds out with my hori hori or another hand tool… Well these would still be in my lawn, getting ready to go to seed. I wouldn’t have attempted. But this tool helped me make a sizeable dent and my curb appeal just increased tenfold.

Excellent for getting full taproot on small dandelions, but nearly useless for large dandelions
Limited effectiveness!!! I would conditionally recommend this product based on “initial quality” impressions, for those looking to “permanently remove small new growth dandelions”, or for those merely looking to “temporarily” clear their lawn of dandelions. This tool is Very effective for long term removal of small new growth dandelions with short taproots. These taproots are easily and (very nearly) completely removed every time. This tool is “not sufficient” for “long term dandelion removal of large established dandelions.” It Rarely pulls the whole taproot. Out of 40 attempts on large established dandelions I was able to pull one complete taproot, four 75% (+ or -) of taproot, five 50% (+ or -) of taproot, and the rest broke off near the base of the dandelion. I tried rocking the puller, pulling very slowly, and even twisting with little to no effect. The ground is very low in clay, and damp (heavy rain two days prior and a light rain the previous night). It struggles to remove taproots much longer than the tools forks. Any taproot left behind will grow back.I purchased the tool to recover large taproots for their herbal properties. For this purpose this tool is completely useless. And for the same reason useless for long term removal of large established dandelions.“Initial Quality” appears to be “very good.” The wood handle feels sturdy and solid; however, it is bowed. I doubt this will affect performance nor durability. The cast iron pulling head appears solid. Movement is not loose nor sloppy. Outside of the possibility natural manufacturing defect, this tool appears to be very good quality. If I decide to keep it, I will update this review with longterm impressions.

Wonderful tool. the cheap fakes suck, but this tool is great. Gets roots and all. in wet weather can get some soil and leave a hole, but they fill in quick and having less weeds is better.

  6. Kathy Oryschak Desjardins

My neighbour was using one of these to ewmove the weeds in his lawn. I can no longer bend over for long periods of time when gardening. This tool is the perfect solution. Well built, sturdy, and it works 🙂

  7. Amazon Customer

I have servere arthritis so my mobility is limited & I am unable to kneel down to weed so I thought I’d look for a weeder that would work upright & didn’t require bending. I did some research & liked the simplicity of this weeder so I order one. I have been able to weed most of my backyard from crabgrass in just a matter of minutes. I don’t like using chemicals as I have a dog & it’s not good for the environment so this is the go to tool for removing those stubborn weeds from your lawn. I absolutely love it & even though I have arthritis it is still very easy to use & also helps keep me active in the garden. 5 stars for sure.

  8. Gerardo

Fácil de usar, muy práctica y muy útil.

  9. Goat Ma

Absolutely love this, works much better than I expected in our rocky ground. Nothing is plastic and if I ever manage to break the handle it would be easy to replace
